A middle school group of 11 students and 2 teachers from Centennial Middle School in Colorado traveled down to Costa Rica from June 10-18, 2017.  The group arrived on Saturday night and spent the first full day zip-lining and getting oriented to the town of Cartago and the CCS home-base.  Each morning from Monday to Friday the group volunteered in Coris Elementary School, providing educational support and completing various small construction projects.  While rotating in small groups, students provided classroom support to the Costa Rican teachers by providing small group lessons in English and arts and crafts in the kindergarten class.  The other groups worked outside on projects such as clearing and preparing a courtyard where they built a border of painted tires, picnic tables, and a recycling center.  Each afternoon also included playtime and exchanges with the students.  In the afternoons the group embarked on guided cultural activities in the area including cooking lessons, dance lessons, a visit to Irazu Volcano National Park, Cartago tour, visit to San Jose artisan market, and much more!  After a tearful closing ceremony and celebration with the school the group departed for Pacific Coast beaches where they spend 2 days enjoying surf lessons, a dolphin watching boat tour, and beach-time. It was hard for the group to say goodbye to Costa Rica but all the memories of cultural discoveries, group bonding, project impacts, and amazing adventures will stay with these students for a lifetime!
