ABOUT US

In April 2024, a group of students from Smith Academy embarked on a journey to El Águila de Pajonal, a small community nestled in the province of Coclé, Panama. Volunteers participated on a week-long Squad from April 2 to April 9. Smiths Academys participated in a Global Impact Squad, combining volunteer work with immersive cultural experiences.

A project made to strengthen education:

The heart of the week-long program revolved around making a tangible and impactful difference in the elementary local school of the community. Volunteers worked to improve the school’s walls and contributed to the construction of a brand-new kitchen. These upgrades were critical to provide a safer and more functional learning environment for the students. Alongside the physical improvements, the squad also led “charlas” workshops that are more focused on personal hygiene education, ensuring the children and community members gained important knowledge on maintaining good health.

While their efforts left a lasting mark on the community, the Smith Academy students also had the chance to dive into the vibrant culture and landscapes of Panama. They marveled at one of the world’s most iconic engineering feats, the Panama Canal, and took a tour of Monkey Island, where they encountered some of the local wildlife up close. Also to ensure volunteers live, a complete cultural exchange they participated in at a guided tour through Casco Viejo, Panama City’s historic district, allowed them to step back in time while taking in stunning architecture and rich history.

Hands-on Cultural Activities

Beyond sightseeing, the students participated in a variety of hands-on cultural activities. They learned how to cook traditional Panamanian tamales, tried their hand at creating Mola paintings and temporary tattoos (reflecting the indigenous art of the region) and made handcrafted jewelry as souvenirs of their experience. Their cultural journey also included a fun-filled day at Nico’s Beach and relaxing evenings by the bonfire at their home base.

Lasting impact, lifelong memories

The week in Panama was more than just a trip—it was an eye-opening experience that shaped the students’ perspectives. By blending service, education, and cultural exchange, the program allowed these young volunteers to give back while gaining an appreciation for a different way of life. The friendships made, the skills learned, and the contributions they left behind will resonate for years to come.
