Join Squads Abroad’s Global Healthcare Challenge and make a real difference in the health of communities around the world.

In the fall of 2024, cohorts from around the world will join together to dive into the heart of healthcare in rural Honduras. Students will explore common diseases and treatments, and create educational materials that empower local Community Health Workers to improve the lives of their neighbors.

Students in this program will:

  • Understand how the social determinants of health impact the lives of people in rural communities in a developing country.
  • Explore details of region-specific diseases and health issues impacting individual and community health.
  • Understand pharmacological practices and the application of traditional medicines.
  • Support the role of the Community Health Workers with the creation of educational material to be used with community members.
  • Complete auto-graded learning assessments (Quiz) and Self-Reflection Activities (auto-graded based on student participation).
  • Collaborate with fellow students to create an educational video for CHWs use with their community members, the best 3 educational videos will be uploaded to the youtube page.

 

GLOBAL HEALTH CHALLENGE

Program Learning Objectives

Students that successfully complete the GLOBAL HEALTHCARE CHALLENGE Program will be able to:
Explain how the social determinants of health impact the lives of people in rural communities in a developing country.
Understand the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of common diseases
Provide educational materials to be used with community members on the prevention of infectious and chronic diseases.

ASYNCHRONOUS SESSIONS

Module 1 – Global Brigades Overview, Introduction to the country context and the Medical and Healthcare Systems in Honduras.

  • Watch the Global Brigades Foundations video that reviews ​​the Holistic Model and the community development approach and activities of the NGO.
    Students take a Quiz 1 on the Global Brigades Foundations video.

  • Watch the Global Brigades Medical Program in Honduras video.
  • Watch the Healthcare System in Honduras video
    • Activity 1: students answer the following questions:
      • What is the difference between the training of medical doctors in Honduras and doctors in your country?
      • What are the strengths and weaknesses of the Honduras healthcare system?
      • Compare and contrast the healthcare system in Honduras with the healthcare system of your own country.
    • Quiz 3: on Honduras healthcare system video
    • Activity 2: Students begin to review the Spanish Medical Vocabulary and Phrasebook to understand some of the terms used in the medical clinic recorder video.

 

Module 2 – Social Determinants of Health

  • Watch the Social Determinants of Health video.
    • Activity 3 : Students write responses to the questions at the end of the Social Determinants of Health video.

 

Module 3 – Community Health Workers (CHWs)

Watch the Community Health Worker/Entrepreneur Program video in Honduras to learn about how they are a resource to support primary healthcare in the remote communities of Honduras
Activity 4 Conduct research to find information about the roles of the CHWs in Tanzania and USA then compare and contrast the results of those countries with the CHWs program in Honduras.

 

Module 4 – Infectious Diseases and Chronic Diseases

  • Watch the Infectious Disease video.
  • Watch the Chronic Diseases video.
    • Quiz 4 Infectious and Chronic Diseases
    • Activity 5 Students continue to review the Spanish Medical Vocabulary and Phrasebook in preparation for the clinic module video.
  • Activity 6 Final Project for Program’s Contest: working on a video program to support the CHW programs in Honduras
    • Students will create a 5-minute video about a chronic or infectious disease assigned to them.
    • Students will include information about
      • What is this disease? Signs, symptoms, routes of transmission.
      • How could this disease be prevented or what to do to have a better quality of life?
      • Treatments (western medication used)
      • The video can be recorded in spanish or add subtitles in spanish

Module 5 – Pharmacology and Traditional Medicine

  • Watch the Commonly Prescribed Medications video.
  • Watch the Traditional Medicine video.
    • Students answer a QUIZ 6 Traditional Medicine

 

Module 6 Rural Clinics in Honduras and the social determinants of health impacting the lives of community members, final reflection and program feedback.

  • Students watch a video of a recent rural clinic in Honduras
  • Activity 7 Students answer the following questions:
    • List some of the social determinants of health and the consequences in the health of the community members
    • After watching the first medical case, think about an advice you will give to the patient to avoid being sick again or to have a better quality of life
    • After watching the dental station , write how can this patient avoid getting an extraction again and what advice will you give him/her to improve her oral condition.
  • Activity 8 Students reflect on the program and evaluate the program
  • Activity 9 Video Contest submission: Students submit their videos

Each Squad type has a skill-based focus area that support the education, health and economic development objectives of community partners. Faculty choose their dates, duration (typically 1-2 weeks), and their site location from one of our six program countries.
