Hannah Hood, a Global Health volunteer with Squads, loved the opportunity to empower the community of Narkwa village in Ghana.
Hannah shared about her volunteer experience with Squads Abroad, which is inspirational for high school teachers to get involved with our programs that empower both students and communities. If you are a teacher who is interested in connecting your students with Squads Abroad, please contact us and we would be happy to provide you more information.
Hannah Hood Middleton High School testimonial:
“If you have the means necessary, I highly recommend taking a Squads Abroad experience to Ghana. It was the experience of a lifetime. I think it’s important for the youth of today to step outside themselves and be immersed in a different country. Growing up as a middle-class girl in rural US, I often took so many things for granted. It was amazing to see the people of Ghana living much more humble lives than we do, and yet living lives of joy and happiness. One thing I learned is you can always find happiness. Through all of my travels throughout the world and especially this trip I have seen people with so much less than me but they are truly happy. While in Ghana I passed kids who were playing and having the time of their lives. They didn’t need cell phones, social media, or expensive toys. They enjoyed playing and being creative together. If you want to help students learn happiness is a choice, I highly encourage you to take them on a squad trip! I loved being able to help renovate an old building to make a computer lab for a school. I loved the opportunity to talk with, play with, and sing with the students at that school. As far as the staff at Ghana, you couldn’t get any better. Even though we were only there for 10 days, they felt like family! We had two group leaders, a police officer, and a nurse with us everywhere we went. There were several other support staff at the compound as well that we grew to love. They are who truly made the trip special and a once in a lifetime experience.”
