Global STEM Squad

Supporting Access to Clean Water in Rural Panama

Last month, Global STEM Squads partnered with UNICEF to bring clean drinking water to the community of Lajas Blancas in Panama. Students from the United States worked alongside the local community to dig 100 meters of trench and install pipes to help complete the new water system.

Lajas Blancas, Comarca Embera Wounan, is part of 10 indigenous communities in the biodiverse region of West Panama. Community members are primarily dedicated to agriculture and the sale of artisanal crafts. Their homes are built by hand, made of wood and mud with tin roofs.

When Squads Abroad originally approached the community, they communicated that accessing clean drinking water was their number one priority. In addition to supporting the water system, Squads Abroad also provides medical services in the area, and plans to provide public health and business services soon.

Squads Abroad is committed to supporting communities around the world to build and maintain clean drinking water systems, and we invite your STEM class to participate either virtually, through live-streamed sessions with water specialists and community leaders, or in-person by traveling to our project sites in Panama or Ghana.

Each Squad type has a skill-based focus area that support the education, health and economic development objectives of community partners. Faculty choose their dates, duration (typically 1-2 weeks), and their site location from one of our six program countries.
