A program for Healthcare Professions students to explore the roles of various members of our International Healthcare organization and issues affecting the delivery of healthcare in Honduras.

Course Description

An overview of roles of various members of our International Healthcare organization and issues affecting the delivery of healthcare in Honduras. Students in this course will explore a variety of allied and behavioral health careers, including the roles, responsibilities, and training required for each. Participants will conduct guided self-assessments to help them envision themselves in rewarding careers that are appropriate to their skills and interests. Students will also learn the roles and responsibilities of different members/functional units of the health care team; information on related job and educational opportunities; needs and roles of health providers in rural and urban settings.

Health Professions Learning Objectives:
Students that successfully complete the program will be able to:

  • Describe five different health careers including duties, educational requirements, and employment opportunities and compare them with your home country.
  • Describe the challenges of the health care system in Honduras  and GB strategies to address them based on the UN sustainable goals.
  • Describe the 6 key principles when treating a patient.
  • Describe at least one disease and the treatment used that you observed during the time you shadow a doctor, dentist , and optometrist and explain one social determinant that is  causing those diseases if related.

Resources provided in support of the virtual sessions and Modules

  • A bilingual, on-the-ground session facilitator will coordinate each virtual session with students.
  • A translator is provided in each virtual session in which students engage with patients and community healthcare workers. Doctors and medical staff are also bilingual.
  • Program materials are provided to all students.
  • Session scheduling that coordinates your course and our online sessions and clinics.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

MODULE 1: Honduran Health System Introduction and Organization Overview

Coordinator and student introductions along with a presentation on our parent organization Global Brigades’ (GB) health and economic development programs in Honduras. Coordinator presents on Global Brigades medical programming in the context of the Honduran medical system. 

MODULE 2: General Physician Q+A and Case Study

Session of Questions and Answers with physicians, where students will learn the academic background needed to become a General Physician and lessons learned with their professional experience, common illnesses treated and how the social determinants of health impact their everyday duties through a case study that will be guided by the health professional. 

MODULE 3: Nutritionist or Dentist Q+A Case study

Students will meet a Nutritionist/Dentist and will have the opportunity of asking questions related to the academic background, lessons learned and good practices during the professional career, common cases seen during consultations and students will be able to analyze a real case, considering the social context of patients assisted in our Urban Clinic in Tegucigalpa, Honduras

MODULE 4: Optometrist Q+A and Case Study

During this session students will gain an understanding on the role an Optometrist plays in the medical field, the academic background needed and common patients treated. Students will learn basic skills and good practices by studying together with the Optometrist as a case study. 

MODULE 5:  Pharmacologist Q+A and Case Study

With the guidance of a trained Pharmacist students will learn about their everyday patients and how the academic formation received on their undergraduate and postgraduate studies has benefited on their professional experience. They will review together some common patient cases and will study a real case assited in our Urban Clinic.

MODULE 6: Clinic Preparation: analyzing medical records and mock patient consultations

Students will practice their medical Spanish for the upcoming clinic days and learn how to analyze medical records from our urban clinic history.

MODULE 7: Urban Clinic Day: Triage

Session shadowing our Honduran doctors in a live-session utilizing telemedical devices at our Urban Clinic in Tegucigalpa.

MODULE 8:Urban Clinic Day: Consultation

Session shadowing our Honduran doctors in a live-session utilizing telemedical devices at our Urban Clinic in Tegucigalpa.

MODULE 9: Urban Clinic Dental/Optometry

Session shadowing our Honduran doctors in a live-session utilizing telemedical devices at our Urban Clinic in Tegucigalpa.

MODULE 10: Community Interventions: HCPA (Health Care Professional Access) + CHW (Community Health Worker) and Final Reflections

Coordinator presents on Global Brigades’ CHW program and Health Care Professional Access program in Honduras and how they are a resource to support primary care in remote communities around the world.

Faculty choose their dates, duration (typically 1-2 weeks), and their site location from one of our six program countries.
